I wish I could say I have a normal family. But I don't. I have a great mom, but I got unlucky with my dad.
"Since I was a kid, I knew something was wrong with my family. Of course, my dad was not an alcoholic or a gambler. He had a good position in a company and a big salary. In public, he tried to look perfect and he was always able to make people like him."
"But at home, my dad was different. He controlled my mom in all the things. It was typical of him to read her social media textings or criticize her clothing and behaviour. And he just didn't pay any attention to me. I didn't think he noticed we lived in the same house at all!"
"I guess, I still wanted a normal family back then. But dad had other plans. A week before my birthday, he just packed up his things and left."
"Soon we found out he had another woman. All my mom’s photos disappeared from his Facebook page. Instead, new ones started to appear: a green-eyed brunette with a fake smile, hugging my dad."
"My mom spent six months living mechanically. She struggled with everyday issues, and I helped her as much as I could. After a while, my mom fell in love again. Her new boyfriend, Tom, was kind and caring. He enjoyed spending time not only with my mom, but also with me. He made funny jokes and always knew how to cheer us up."
"I thought I'd never hear from my dad again. But somehow flowers started to appear next to our door: tulips, roses, even orchids in bouquets and pots. Sometimes they had notes with the compliments for my mom: "You are so beautiful”, “I dream of You”, “I Can't wait to meet you"."
"At first, we thought it was Tom. Of course, such phrases were typical of him, but what if he was just trying to be romantic? My mom thanked him many times for such surprises. But he wondered what she was talking about."
"One day my mom asked him about the flowers in a serious voice. Tom honestly said he had not sent such gifts. Then we all got our hearts sank. My mom got a secret wooer who knew where she lived. However, the truth was worse than we expected."
"One day mom had a call. It was late in the evening. Mom glanced at her cell screen and turned pale. I rushed to her when she accepted the call and asked in a trembling voice «Why are you calling me?»"
"Through the speaker, I heard my dad's voice: «Hello! It's been a long time. I was wondering how your things were… so I decided to make a call. By the way, did you like my gifts? I don't remember what flowers you like, so I just ordered everything. Did I manage to guess it at least once?»."
"My mom looked me in the eye and said in a hard voice: «It's great you called. I've wanted to tell you for a long time it's over between us. I love another man, and we've been dating for over a year. I have nothing to do with you».Then, without a word, she hung up."
"From that day on dad started calling us every day - in the morning and in the evening. Sometimes he called in the middle of the night. We never knew in advance when we would hear a new call. My mom tried adding him to the blacklist. But he kept calling from the new numbers. I started to shudder when I heard my mom’s ringtone and I was afraid to answer any calls from unknown people."
"It's strange he only called my mom. Dad didn't even think about me now. I don't know how he got more than 50 new numbers in such a short time (we changed SIM cards so that he stopped calling), but I'm sure it was not legal."
"Although night calls were scary, this wasn't the worst part. Instead of flowers, he started sending garbage on our veranda. It looked like it was taken out of our bucket and scattered all over. And there were always some sarcastic notes there, kinda «How do you like this gift?» or «Do you think you have the right to ignore me?»."
"We put the trash in the house, and then instead of rotten fruit and wrappers, dad started throwing us broken glass. And once, when I opened the door, I saw a dead pigeon on the porch. I started crying. I didn't think my dad would be able to do this."
"Mom and Tom finally set up some video surveillance cameras next to our doors so that we could have the evidence to show to the police."
"While they were doing this, I decided I also wanted to do something helpful to protect us from my dad. And first I decided to find out the truth."
