Gokulpuri Tyre Market Almost all shops were gutted in the fire Gokulpuri tyre market on Monday night was set on fire during violence which erupted over the newly amended citizenship law in the capital’s North-East district.

The fire department received a call about the massive fire at around 8.30pm, a fire department official was quoted saying. 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, however, they failed to control the fire and the entire market was engulfed.

Almost all shops were gutted in the fire by the time it was brought under control by the fire department.

“The fire was brought under control by 11:40pm and the cooling process is underway,” an official said.

Gokalpuri’s tyre market is located just behind the Gokalpuri metro station. The market sees a dominant presence of shops owned by Muslims. Areas peripheral to Gokalpuri also witnessed a spate of violence, particularly Chandbagh, Jaffarabad, Khajuri Khas and Bhajanpura.

Gokalpuri is an assembly constituency in the northeast district of Delhi bordering Uttar Prades which hosts a sizeable Muslim population.

On Monday, the anti-CAA protesters at several places were attacked by a mob which resulted in stone pelting from both the sides.

Police lathi-charged the anti-CAA protesters on Sunday, at several protest sites including Chandbagh and Jaffrabad.

On Sunday, BJP leader Kapil Mishra had organised a rally in support of CAA near Maujpur-Babarpur metro station in the northeast district. Later he also addressed the people who gathered in support of CAA, “threating action” against anti-CAA protesters if the Jaffrabad road was not opened. He, however, left the place after addressing the gathering. Later the crowd allegedly attacked the anti-CAA protesters, resulting in stones pelting from both ends.

Soon after the violence spread to other parts of the district. Shops, houses and a petrol pump were also set blaze in the district.

Seven people were killed including a police head constable and at least 75 were injured as violence spiralled over the citizenship law in many parts of Delhi.
