Peter Roselle: Possessing Your Vessel - Awakening the Slumbering Spirit

Peter Roselle: Possessing Your Vessel - Awakening the Slumbering Spirit Peter Roselle: Possessing Your Vessel - Awakening the Slumbering Spirit
“A slumbering spirit is a condition in which our personal spirit has not been fully awakened, so that certain facets of our lives lie dormant. Slumbering spirits are a primary cause of the powerlessness and sin we see in the Body of Christ. This lesson helps us understand the functions of our own personal or human spirit. If we are not awake in our spirit, we will not be able to function in various areas of life. We will look at What causes the spirit to slumber; How to identify the symptoms of a slumbering spirit; How to distinguish between soul and spirit, and between true conscience and remorse conscience. Our loving Lord has made provision; no one need remain asleep. Definite steps can be made to awaken slumbering spirits. Especially in this area, we need the Church to be the Church – the family of God.

1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like
a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Proverbs 7
21 With her enticing speech
she caused him to yield,
With her flattering lips she seduced him.
22 Immediately he went after her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks,
23 Till an arrow struck his liver.
As a bird hastens to the snare,
He did not know it would cost his life.

Luke 12:35-37
“Let your waist be girded and your lamps
burning; and you yourselves be like men
who wait for their master,
when he will return from the wedding,
that when he comes and knocks
they may open to him immediately.
Blessed are those servants
whom the master, when he comes,
will find watching.

Matthew 25:12-13
He answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to
you, I do not know you.’ “Watch therefore, for you know
neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

Matthew 26:40-41
Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter,
“What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Genesis 4:6-7 (NASB / NKJV)
The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?
And why has your countenance fallen?
If you do well, will you not be accepted?
And if you do not do well,
sin is crouching at the door.
And its desire is for you,
but you should rule over it.”

“When slumbering spirits begin to come
to life, they often run away because of fear.
We are more afraid of good than we are of bad.
We flee when goodness touches us because it makes
us vulnerable, and we’d often rather sleep than be vulnerable.

From C.S. Lewis, “The Four Loves”
“To love at all is to be vulnerable.
Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken.
If you want to make sure of keeping
it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal.
Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements.
Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness.
But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change.
It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.
To love is to be vulnerable.”

The counselor must teach those with
slumbering spirits to face the pain of life,
and help them not to roll over and go back to sleep again –
the main and most successful cure for a slumbering spirit is vulnerability
to others and close relationships with the Body of Christ.

Paradox: Christians who have been serving the Lord many years,
Spirit-filled, strong bible knowledge, yet still falling
into patterns of sin and destructive behavior.
“…Inside ourselves questions were
tumbling, “How can this happen Lord?”

First, He said, “John, these people do not
have an alert and functioning personal spirit. Their own personal
spirit is not awake – they have a slumbering spirit.”
We are born with an alive and awakened
personal spirit. But that spirit needs to be met, welcomed,
loved and nurtured through warm physical affection…
…to the degree his spirit is not kept awake
or drawn forth, it fails to enter full functioning ability –
he stays slumbering.
