Why Didn't James Potter's Sacrifice Protect Lily?

The night Voldemort arrived at the potters home in Godrics Hollow and murdered James and Lily is not a tale that many who knew the couple would want to hear be told very often. However something that is quite puzzling is James Potter’s death. Harry was protected by Lily’s love for him, yet James Potter sacrificed himself for both Harry and Lily but nothing happened.
