Tension Over Position in the Squat: Why I Rarely Cue for Knees Out

Tension Over Position in the Squat: Why I Rarely Cue for Knees Out In a world of Good, Better, or Best, “knees out” is probably the most overused (often ineffectively) cues on the face of the planet apart from “engage your core”. Is it a good cue? It can be depending on the person and the situation. Is it the best cue? I hardly ever use it anymore.

This video is a follow up to a couple videos I posted in late 2017. I’ve learned a lot since then. Could those videos still be useable today? Sure but I have had a TON of success teaching the squat THIS way.

My new mantra for 2020 adds to my 2019 mantra: “It Depends.”… The answer to all things is “It Depends: There’s Good, Better, or Best”

Can you create a “good” position with a “knees out” cue ? YES

Can you create a better, stronger, more stable, more ACTIVE position by teaching TENSION first? Absolutely.

Position doesn’t automatically mean tension in the most optimal places… But tension in the optimal places DOES create optimal position.

For the average Joe who doesn’t care about all the “nuancy” stuff, “knees out” might be just fine…until stuff starts to hurt. I prefer to educate my movers as to the why of the things. They’re more willing to accept the learning curve involved to be better.
