The regime’s foreign ministry put out a statement ahead of the holiday, calling for “stronger cooperation with socialist countries.” What message is it trying to convey? Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Pyeongyang to return to the negotiating table at the Munich Security Conference. But days earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly told his advisers that he is not interested in another summit with Kim before the presidential election. Trump has also made some personnel reshuffles of officials previously involved in North Korea talks, raising concerns that he could be losing interest in the issue. What is Washington’s official stance on re-entering talks with the North? In its first response to Seoul’s push for individual tourism to the North, North Korea indicated the project needs to be discussed between the two Koreas, not with the U.S. Will a slew of challenges facing the regime encourage it to re-engage with the South?
